Our History

Black Creek store stands as Lighthouse Restaurant today

FORT ERIE An old landmark, used by large pleasure boats and the Black Creek Store, dating as far back as 1842 has recently changed hands. Many changes have been made over the century, but it will continue as a store and snack bar.

The first store was owned and operated by Robert Ingram on the Niagara River at Black Creek – so named because of the colour of the water. Mr. Ingram chose this location for the pleasure of living near water and also for the fact that water was easy means of communication in those days.

In 1855 another business was added to this progressive community and the first Allen saw mill was built. In 1866 this mill was replaced by a large steam mill. At the height of the business Mr Allen got out as much as a million and one half feet of lumber in one winter. This lumber was used mainly for dock and ship building in Buffalo.
